I read this article when it came out last year and am considering its importance again today: In 2013, a mere 3% of children’s books were about black people…despite the fact that in the United States today 40% of public school students nationwide are black and Latino. To quote the author, “Books transmit values. They explore our common humanity. What is the message when some children are not represented in those books?”
The article is well worth a read as you consider the types of stories and illustrations your children are exposed to!
